Beijing National Stadium
Things to do in
While officially known as the National Stadium, most English speakers will know it as the Bird's Nest. The site was the central point of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where it was designed with a modern take on classic north-south architecture present among other landmarks in the capital city.
Although you can enter the building, outside of commercial events, such as APEX conferences, most visitors simply arrive in the evening hours to enjoy the lights of the stadium and the nearby structures of the Olympics. You may find yourself engaged by hawkers selling kites or photographs, but the stands offering hawthorn berries on a stick are a definite win for tasty treats!
The site is about 8km (5 miles) north from the centre of Beijing. A taxi or driver service can get you there in under an hour, dependent on traffic. Subway transportation is available via Line 8 or Line 15, stopping at Olympic Green Station and then walk the last 800m (1/2 mile) onto the stadium.
