The largest city of Crete, it is named for the hero of Greek mythology, Hercules. Just remember that locally and throughout not only different times but different local cultures, the symbolism of the demi-god was not always a positive one!
Several historic influences remain in the city, including a fair number of Venetian landmarks. Among the most visible if arriving by sea, the Venetian Fortress at the port or the Morosini Fountain in the city's centre.
The current airport at Heraklion is set to be replaced in 2023.
Arrange a private vehicle or secure a rental in advance. Local bus and taxi services are reliable. Note for rental vehicle, an international driver's licence including appropriate endorsements is required.
The largest city of Crete (Kriti) and home to its own cruise port, much of the city centre attractions are accessible on foot or local taxi, while the Palace of Knossos must be achieved in a vehicle.
