Palace of Knossos
Things to do in
Arrive earlier in the day and head straight for the throne chamber
A once-glorious palace of the Minoan people named for their king, Minos. Here, stories of the Minotaur come to life as visitors might better understand the people who held such beliefs.
Much of the ruins have been reduced to rubble during earthquakes of centuries passed. There are a few spaces with more modern preservation techniques applied, alongside a few attempts to rebuild columns and frescoes of the central spaces.
The site of the ruins is just beyond the city of Heraklion. Private vehicle charter or rental may be advised, note that rentals require an international driver's licence including appropriate endorsements.
