Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden
Things to do in
A private botanical garden north of Hilo, near the Onomea Bay region of Hawaii's Big Island. Operating as a non-profit, the partially cleared tropical forest has been welcoming visitors since 1984, giving guests a peak into what they imagine Hawaii looks like before they ever arrived on the islands.
Expect to pay around $20 per person to visit the site and around an hour or two to explore the boardwalks and collections presented here.
Not actually that far from the Hilo International Airport (ITO) on Hawaii's Big Island, the journey must be completed by land around 16.7km (just over 10 miles) north along the coast.
From the city of Hilo, visitors may venture north along the coast toward Onomea to find the botanical gardens, a journey time of about 30 minutes.
As with air travel, cruise itineraries calling to port in Hilo will experience roughly the same journey time and may require use of a vehicle to complete the journey north from Hilo.
