Things to do in
Locally known as Mokuola, the "Island of Life". Coconut Island is but one of a number of small spots dotted throughout the Hawaiian Islands which bears the same name, the one in Hilo is distinct in its accessibility. A very popular place for families, owing to its calm waters and complimentary facilities for picnic time by the sea!
While swimming is a popular activity, the water here is not clear enough to enjoy any serious snorkelling. The island may be welcome respite for travel weary families with young children if enjoying a cruise vacation.
Only a little further into / beyond the Liliuokalani Gardens, the island area is accessible by foot and not vehicles, although there is a parking area on the Hilo town side of the pedestrian bridge.
From your cruise into Hilo Bay the island is accessible by foot or a (very) short journey into Liliuokalani Gardens. There is a pedestrian bridge to wrap up the journey.
