Things to do in
The caves are part of a much larger lava tube system which was formed during activity from Mauna Loa in 1881, but much of the 25 miles of tunnels run under private property and are not open for visitation by the public. Dress appropriately for unstable footing and bring a flashlight if you want to make the most of your visit.
There is a staircase and some semblance of a trail, roughly 800m (1/2 mile) in length.

West from Hilo about 7km (4.5 miles) along Highway 200, there is parking available on the opposite side of the road.
