Visiting the site between 3-7AM now requires advanced reservations
One of the most revered experiences on all of Hawaii, the sunrise over Haleakala has become so popular as to result in the occasional traffic jam at the summit during the early hours before dawn. That said, a well-planned and prepared excursion to the peak to enjoy the sunrise is something you'll never forget! Just remember to dress for colder weather, at more than 3,000m / 10,000ft, you'll be subject to vastly different weather than at the foot of the mountain.
Congestion has increased at the summit during the past few years and visitors arriving between 3-7AM will now need to make advanced reservations. The fee is nominal and the booking window opens roughly 60 days in advance of any planned arrival. Worried about the crowds and other realities of modern tourism? Why not turn that sunrise visit into a sunset one? Our own local blogger, Adrian has shared a few thousand words on the merits of a more relaxed visit during the hours toward dusk and the incredible opportunity to view some stars in the clear mountain air.
Some direct overseas flights and connecting services via Honolulu (HNL) are achieved at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG).
Congestion is real along some of the winding road and at the peak's rest and parking areas, especially during the hours before sunrise. Tours and rental cars should be booked well in advance of your arrival to Hawaii.
A variety of cruise itineraries visit Maui, our favourite choice for cruise itinerary is the Pride of America from Norwegian Cruise Lines as it allows a full day on Maui and plenty of opportunity to explore, including the Haleakala Crater.
