The temple is symbolic of the 100 years of Japanese immigration to Hawaii when it was opened in 1968. It is nestled among the green peaks of Oahu's Ko'olau Mountains. It is a smaller scale replica of a near-1000 year old temple in Japan bearing the same name.
Although a Buddhist temple, it is non-denominational and guests are welcome to view the grounds or practice their worship. You'll enjoy it if you have any interest in botanical gardens and the unique local blend of Japanese and Hawaiian cultures.
Planning your trip
You can walk the grounds at your leisure, but an arranged tour might help you get more out of the site's rich history; the 150th anniversary was celebrated in 2018!
When you should go
Loving Honolulu but want a bit of scenery outside the city? It's only a short trip up the Kahekili Highway. They recommend you bring bug repellent.
What else you might need
The temple grounds are open most days of the year from 8:30am to 5pm, there's a small entry fee of $5 for adults (13-64), $4 for seniors (65+) and and $2 for children (2-12), payable in cash only. You can also arrange a guided tour in advance.
