Chengdu is a rather large city in China's Southwest and the capital of Sichuan Province. A gateway into Tibet for some, the city itself is often the destination as visitors come to catch a glimpse of the giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Local landmarks and attractions include the Nine Eye Bridge, Jinli Pedestrian Street, and in true Chinese fashion, the spicy local food! You'll enjoy Chengdu if you're obsessed with pandas, if it's not your first visit to China, or if you're looking for a sort of "home base" to explore the incredible hidden gems of Sichuan Province.

Planning your trip

As above, you're pretty much obliged to check out the pandas and eat something ridiculously spicy. Look for ways to get out of the city and to explore the wilder areas of the province.

When you should go

Chengdu's summers can be oppressively hot, while winters can be cool to cold; the city is at elevation.

What else you might need

As an alternate to any Chinese visa, a 144-hour transit visa does exist for those passing through Chengdu. Some strict rules apply and you should check in with your advisor or another trusted resource when it comes to planning any short visit. China's transit visas tend toward air passengers who hold onward tickets, not only can this come with some unexpected strings attached, but the requirement to bounce onward to another destination might severely limit your options for flying with a comfortable, reliable airline.
