Czech Republic

Formerly the upper half (roughly) of Czechoslovakia, the single nation divided into the Czech Republic and the nation of Slovakia in 1993. More recently, the nation's leadership has moved to establish the use of simply "Czechia", it remains to be seen how long it may take for the general public to join them with enthusiasm. The Czech Republic's European history is rich and varied, with a healthy dose of medieval castles to top it all off.
Not exactly an off the beaten path destination, most North American visitors fail to explore beyond Prague. You may love the people, the beer, and the landscapes if you do decide to dedicate a bit of time in your itinerary.
Planning your trip
The Czech Republic offers some excellent opportunities to explore the landscapes and cities along waterways such as the Danube and even the Elbe. Allowing a better opportunity to explore the country beyond simply a night or two in Prague.
When you hear "Czech" you might also be thinking "beer", and that's brilliant. The nation offers a wide variety of well-known and lesser known brews to enjoy during your visit. If it helps get you out of Prague and exploring more of the rich culture here, excellent! Just be aware that the Czech Republic carries a zero tolerance approach to drinking and driving, with blood alcohol levels over 0.00 being in violation of those rules.
When you should go
The Czech Republic welcomes guests throughout the year, however you'll find peak season to fall in the late spring through early autumn months. There is another smaller peak when winter weather visitors arrive to explore the Christmas Markets, although the Czech celebrations are noteworthy in that they can extend from late November into the first week of January.
What else you might need
The Czech Republic is a Schengen area member nation and welcomes visitors from the US for tourism purposes for up to 90 days without any advanced visa arrangements. Note that this visa-free period is limited to any cumulative 90 days spent anywhere within the Schengen area. We suggest planning your passport renewal where your intended exit from the Czech Republic or from the Schengen area is less than 180 days in advance of your passport's expiration. Make sure you also secure your digital ETIAS in advance of your trip.
