Officially the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, located just on the outskirts of sprawling Chengdu. The facility opened in 1987 with only a handful of individual pandas, since then they claim to have bred 261 animals and have welcomed some 3.5 million visitors a year (2017). Wild numbers seem to be increasing, but the range is entirely within China's borders and the government claims ownership of each individual panda throughout the world. It's no longer possible to hold a panda here, but still likely the best opportunity you'll have in seeing pandas in a natural setting. Although that last claim should be tempered, the wild range of pandas tends to fall in protected areas inaccessible to tourists. The pandas you see rolling around the slopes here are captive bred and the facility backs onto a reservation area purpose-built/claimed specifically for the panda breeding effort.

A blend of traditional Chinese zoo with gardens and a research & education component, you can spend a few hours here just walking the suggested route away from the water features and toward the mountainside home of the re-established pandas. If you have any interest in China's unique wildlife, this is the spot for you in Chengdu!

Planning your trip

Although you'll find some small amount of signage in English, you'll likely find that this attraction is catered more toward domestic travelers and that you're missing out on a great opportunity to learn something special if you don't have a guided experience of some description.

When you should go

Summer months in Chengdu can be oppressively hot, making your visit a little less comfortable. You'll likely encounter fewer tourists if you arrive early in the day.

What else you might need

The visitors' areas are open most days from 7:30am through 6:00pm, expect about $10 equivalent value of ticket price per person. This can be arranged on arrival but may best be included as part of your larger itinerary and arranged in advance.
