One of the five volcanoes which together comprise the Big Island of Hawaii, Kilauea had been in a near-constant state of eruption for 35 years, right up to September of 2018 and following a sort of crescendo in terms of eruptions earlier in that same year.
In December of 2018, following more than 90 days of inactivity, the volcano was declared to be dormant and the once-flowing rivulets of lava which attracted tourists from all over the world ceased to flow. After several sporadic months of activity from December 2020 through May of 2021, lava has once again been seen pooling in the caldera in September of 2021!
Planning your trip
You might still enjoy a visit to Kilauea as available, there's said to be a water-filled lake now in place of the lava at the peak of the volcano.
