Possibly our top choice for things to see in Mexico City, the architecture is unquestionably beautiful and its location in popular Zócalo makes it an easy choice for things to see even if you're only in town for a short visit.
Built over nearly 250 years in sections, the last of which was completed in 1813. The most striking part of the architecture today is the "sinking" aspect, as the weight of the building and the softness of the earth on which it sits means the building is being slowly returned to the earth. Upon close inspection during your visit, you'll be able to see the cables which affix the structure to the ground in order to slow the process, along with some great cultural exposure to a thriving local church-going community.
Planning your trip
As far as we know, there isn't really any official tour. There are some areas of the grounds presented for the benefit of tourists, showcasing the sinking aspect of the Cathedral, however. If you're smart and hire a guide or join a tour of the city, there's a good chance the Cathedral will be included in your itinerary.
When you should go
The cathedral is normally open 7 days a week, 8am through 8pm. There may be extended or reduced hours during particular events and celebrations throughout the year.
What else you might need
You won't need a ticket to enter, but do remember that visiting as a tourist will put you in the minority of all guests present. As an active place of worship, try to be quiet and respectful. That might mean removing your headwear and avoiding taking any pictures of people praying. Dress conservatively for the occasion.
