Osaka is one of Japan's largest cities, located in the Kansai region of Honshu, the main island of Japan. Despite its size, it's a charming city with an amazing variety of food, friendly people and great history. Osaka is often called "the town of the merchant" because of the historic flow of goods on the many large rivers crossing the city.
Osaka is definitely a place for foodies. If you're ready and willing to try communicating with the talkative local people, you'll get a lot out of your visit. Restaurants in Namba, one of Osaka's more vibrant areas, are packed with people around the clock!
Planning your trip
Visitors tend to agree that the most iconic river in Osaka is Doutonbori, which is in Osaka's downtown Namba area.
Head to Osaka Castle after you fill your stomach with food in Namba, make sure you try some of the famous Osakan food such as Okonomiyaki, a local style of savory pancake, Takoyaki octopus balls or Kushikatsu - a style of deep fried skewers!
When you should go
You can enjoy Ohanami between late March and late April in Osaka Castle Park. Ohanami means "cherry blossom viewing", which is one of the most universal pasttimes among both Japanese people and visitors to Japan. In Ohanami, friends, families gather under the sakura trees and have a picnic. Osaka Castle is the most popular place for Ohanami and it's very accessible from the city center.
