No one's really certain how the pigs came to exist on the uninhabited island of Major Cay in Exuma. No one's really certain how long they've been there, either. One story we've heard is that a businessman brought them to the island in the latter part of the 90s as a local agri-business venture.

While the attraction of swimming with the pigs, or at least photographing the pigs swimming, has taken off during the last few years, we're not certain it's for everyone. The experience might seem a little contrived for some and many of the local people elsewhere in The Bahamas might think you're a bit crazy for wanting to swim through all the pig poop just for a photo op! If you're still set on seeing them, definitely go for it. The day is yours and the experience is what you make of it!

Planning your trip

The swimming pigs of The Bahamas are actually located on an island of the Exumas, a fair distance by boat from Nassau. Don't expect to see them quickly on a short visit via cruise ship, such a shore trip requires a bit of planning.

Following a suspected incidence of poisoning in 2017, visitors aren't supposed to feed and interact with the pigs as was once permitted. Although they're still a highlight for many visitors to the Exumas and The Bahamas in general!

When you should go

As this activity has become more popular during the last few years, while we wouldn't expect crowds you might not be the only people visiting the little piggies on the day of your excursion. You'll likely find the earlier part of the day to be more comfortable and with fewer other guests on boats of their own.

What else you might need

You'll need transportation to deliver you to the island and to get you back to your ship or accommodation. This may be arranged on the island, but it is simple and easy to organize in advance as part of your itinerary.
