In another life, I was a military linguist. I'm a huge fan of linguistics and place names are a particular interest.
Mexico is pretty cool in that it has a lot of Spanish but also Mayan-language place names. That means a lot of really cool history and you just have to listen.
My wife lived in Mexico for a fair few years and always talks about the beach at Akumal and seeing sea turtles every time she went in the water there. It wasn't until I was researching a client trip some years later that I came across this little nugget in conjunction with a stay at the Luxury Sian Ka'an resort - itself named for the UNESCO World Heritage site nearby.
Apparently Akumal means Place of the Turtle in Mayan. Which makes my wife's stories about the sea turtle sightings make so much more sense now!
I guess my point is two-fold:
Go to Akumal for an opportunity to see a sea turtle while you're out snorkeling or on a little day trip.
If you're on an all-inclusive vacation in Mexico, make sure you take at least one day trip and hire a local guide. Ask them about the place names!
There are some really cool meanings and there's an awful lot of amazing history tied to Mayan and Aztec culture throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.
Even Cancun is thought to reference Kukulcan, another moniker for the feathered serpent revered in the time they were building the pyramids.
I absolutely love Akumal and when ever I get asked for recommendations Akumal is top of my list. I must have been over 20 times and encountered sea turtles every time, some days more than others and depending on the seasons you can also swim amongst the babies which is spectacular...just make sure to respect them and their home by not touching anything including the turtles.
