Can American citizens get a marriage license in Jamaica?
Getting married in Jamaica is simple and easy. As long as all the necessary documentations and arrangements are taken care of prior to arriving, just show up and enjoy your big day!
Do you know if a blood test is needed or what kinds of documents couples should prepare?
No blood test is required to get married in Jamaica.
Required documentation:
Proof of Citizenship
Certified copy of birth certificate, which includes father's name
Parent's written consent if under 18 years of age
Proof of divorce if applicable(original certificate of divorce)
Certified copy of death certificate for widow or widower
Special note: all documents that are not issued in English must be translated by an Official Translator and subsequently certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of residence and by the nearest Jamaican Misson or Honorary Consulate.
Thinking of getting married in Jamaica?
Visitors can be married just 24hrs after arriving on the island, providing prior application has been made for a marriage licence to the Ministry of Justice.
If you are getting married at one of our local hotels, the wedding co-ordinator will make these arrangements on your behalf.
Quite thorough, @Yvonne ! Thanks. Any idea how far in advance the prior application needs to be initiated?
@Shy if couples are getting married at one of the resorts, the wedding coordinator will make all the arrangements on behalf of the couple once they have confirmed their date.
However, if a couple chooses to make the arrangements themselves the application must be submitted to the Ministry of Justice which may take a bit longer.
So I would suggest if taking that route one should ensure they are givng themselves a fair amount of time in advance of their date.
Thanks, @Yvonne ! Great suggestion and an idea for another question!
