Did you ever consider to visit the Netherlands?
Worth while visiting the east of the country, Arnhem.
The beautiful Dutch Open Air museum, with old buildings, crafts, mills and a very modern exposition of the history of the NL with inter-active games. Worth a visit, possibly too much for one day.. (44 hectares)
Arnhem is also well-known because the WW II. The allied army lost
the battle of Arnhem in 1944. Airborne museum in Oosterbeek. The airborne field in the neighbourhood. Also the war museum in Groesbeek (near Nijmegen) is worth a visit. Every year their are celebrations, and this year it is 75 years ago, that the NL have been freed.
Not far from Arnhem there is the Kröller-Muller museum, with a lot of modern art (many paintings from Van Gogh) in a beautiful park, that you could cross by bike. (After entering this park the bikes you may use for free!)
Okay, you would like to go to Amsterdam? No problem, the train will bring you in one hour from Arnhem to Amsterdam.
Yes, every year, 5 May there is a liberation concert on the Amstel canal in Amsterdam. The royal family is always present there and everyone is welcome. It starts 20.30 hrs. and it is for free. Every year the concert ends with “We ‘ll meet again, don’t know how, don’t know when.”.....etc. Everyone will sing along and it is a very special relaxed atmosphere.
And when you are on Liberation Day in Wageningen (city of the well-known agricultural university, WUR), you could start that day in the Belmonte Arboretum.
Performances take place all over the centre of the city. One of the high-lights of the day is the military parade. The spectators show their appreciation and gratitude for all veterans, especially for the small group of veterans who liberated the NL.
This year there are several celebrations on the 5th of May. Liberation Day. 4en5mei.nl is a website also in English. Wageningen is nearby Arnhem and Ede and there is a great music festival and a big military liberation parade on the 5th of May.
Wageningen45.nl is a website about all celebrations in Wageningen. (Only Dutch language)
I visited Arnhem unfortunately some time before you and I had become properly acquainted, @mariet.arentsen! It was in 2010, as part of a battlefield tour.
I must also admit that there was so much focus on last year's 75th celebrations in Normandy, it completely escaped me that there was another set of WWII anniversaries to celebrate this year in the Netherlands - do you know which date is planned to be the largest celebration this year in and around Arnhem?
