My wife and I lived in South Florida for a few years and, while we didn't really see any around South Beach or Miami's downtown, sightings there do make the news from time to time.
We lived in Boca Raton toward the end of our time, the southernmost edge of Palm Beach County. There are a few wildlife refuges such as Loxahatchee which almost guaranteed a sighting, alongside journeys into or through the Everglades.
However, I did see one in the canal behind our home on one occasion.
This "little" guy was probably above the 6-foot mark, I spotted him while cycling over a canal just a few hundred yards from our home! Pardon the trash, the proximity here to the highway means the unfortunate presence of bottles and other garbage / recyclables being blown into the canal.
