Apollo Temple

Across Greece and even Turkey, you'll find a number of temples dedicated to the Greek god Apollo. Here in Naxos, the temple was never finished and the ruins you see are best identified by the large marble gate, the Portara. Construction occurred during the 6th Century BC, commissioned by a ruler known as a tyrant, Lygdamis.
Love Ancient Greece and all the history of the islands? Make sure you add the temple to your itinerary if you're staying in Naxos. The island isn't that large and you'll likely have to pass through Naxos Town at some point anyhow.
Planning your trip
As there is no ticketed entry, there's also no signage or any sort of information to help you enjoy your visit and to explore the historic significance the gate and ruins represent. Consider the services of a local guide during your stay in Naxos if you're looking to dive a little deeper into the rich local history.
When you should go
The Portara was designed to look out on to the sea. With a westward view, today's ruins welcome more visitors during the evening hours as the sun sets.
What else you might need
You won't need any sort of ticket or to arrange any sort of entry to access the areas of the ruins.
