The city of Lao Cai features the same name as the province in which it is found and rests directly on the border with China. It's a popular border crossing for Chinese tourists and represents an interesting political crossroads where the Nanxi River (China) becomes the Red River (Vietnam), leading to the capital, Hanoi.
Most visits to Lao Cai for US & Canadian tourists feature as ancillary to an itinerary, the city has a convenient location for a border crossing by land into China or to explore karst landscapes of Sapa and the nearby mountain villages. You'll not likely spend much time in Lao Cai itself.
