Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter are two tiny villages with giant history, featuring in the Domesday Book and enjoying rich connotations despite the grim moniker. Old English "slaughter" simply describing a wet or muddy environment of the area circa 1086, although people likely lived here far earlier. The Slaughter family was also a real group of early inhabitants, responsible for some of the settlement's 12th Century upgrades from the earlier Norman architecture.
Today, the villages are better described as Tudor with stunning views of rolling hillsides where you can peak out of treelined paths and gladed streams. It's absolutely a place you'll enjoy for quiet strolls and leisurely hikes for picturesque if secluded views.
Planning your trip
You'll need transportation to visit the villages, best to plan an early arrival if you're enjoying a self-drive vacation in order to park easily and without disrupting local life. Consider a lunchtime escape to nearby Bourton-on-the-Water.
When you should go
As with most places in the Cotswolds, it does attract visitors throughout the year. As a visitor, you'll probably enjoy the greenery most in summer months with late May or early June providing quieter yet green surroundings.
Expect classic English weather, understanding that although things aren't quite as they were a thousand years ago, the earth can still be a bit damp and muddy. This is particularly true in the lower elevations or around the waterways off-track.
What else you might need
You won't need any sort of document to visit the villages, however a reservation at the local pub wouldn't be a bad idea during sunny days. There aren't many places to stop and refresh yourself.
