A private botanical garden located in the Papaikou region just north of Hilo, near Onomea Bay on Hawaii's Big Island. Operating as a non-profit, the partially cleared tropical forest has been welcoming visitors since 1984, giving guests a peak into what they imagine Hawaii looks like before they ever arrived on the islands.
The picturesque gardens offer the kinds of views many people have come to expect from a tropical vacation. You'll enjoy a leisurely stroll among the greenery.
Planning your trip
The walking trails stretch about 1.25 miles / 2km, expect about 1 hour to 90 minutes to stroll the bulk of it in your comfy shoes. Umbrellas are available, it is 20 outdoor acres of gardens in a tropical setting. Guided tours are available if arranged in advance and for a fee.
When you should go
The site is open throughout the year from 9am to 5pm, with the exception of a few holidays on July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. You'll have not only reduced crowds but also preferred rates of entry if you plan to arrive before 10am.
What else you might need
Entry is $25 for adults, $20 if you're active duty military. Children 6-12 are $12 and complimentary for those children under 6. As mentioned above, there is a preferred rate for arrivals prior to 10am.
