The caves are part of a much larger lava tube system which was formed during activity from Mauna Loa in 1881, but much of the 25 miles of tunnels run under private property and are not open for visitation by the public.
Adventurous souls seeking a bit of rudimentary caving might enjoy the little dive. Dress appropriately for unstable footing and bring a flashlight if you want to make the most of your visit. There is a staircase and some semblance of a trail, roughly 800m (1/2 mile) in length.
Planning your trip
If you're in Hawaii as part of a cruise, the caves are a little too far to walk from the cruise port in Hilo. Instead plan to rent a vehicle or include Kaumana as part of a shore excursion.
You won't need too much time to visit the caves, plan your trip well to include another nearby attraction.
When you should go
Pair this landmark with another local site in Hilo such as the Rainbow Falls to make the most of your day out.
The caves aren't particularly deep, however they remain a bit cooler than the surface and if you're planning on spending any time within you should dress accordingly.
What else you might need
At the time of writing, your visit should be complimentary with no staffed point of entry. However, as mentioned above, much of the cave system is under private property and is inaccessible. There is a small volume of local parking available.
