Your Guide To
St Bartholomew the Great

An absolutely incredible hidden gem just steps away from bustling Smithfield Market. Built in 1123, it is proudly self-proclaimed as the oldest priory in all of London. Despite its enormous age, the building is exceptionally well preserved.
It's truly hard to describe how magical a sight to behold, a 12th Century church melded almost seamlessly into the surrounding buildings. Certainly visit if you are of faith or an architectural enthusiast, but you will not regret sharing some of your day to enjoy the exquisite lawn and interior design.
Planning your trip
There is a guided tour available if arranged in advance, daily except Sundays. If you're on foot or have time to extend your local visit, if you're planning on visiting Smithfield Market during the same period you may have a challenge to coordinate the opening hours of the church with the 8am close of the wholesale market.
When you should go
The church itself is open to visitors Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm, with active worship on Sundays when your touristic endeavors may conflict with the intended use of the building.
What else you might need
Although Great St Bart's was among the first of London's churches to ask an admission of tourists back in 2007, the requirement has since been stopped and you are instead encouraged to leave a donation. Guided tours are a paid, ticketed experience.
